ôThe actual capturing of a song is a process all on itÆs own.
You get to the end of it and sometimes youÆre there and
sometimes youÆre not. ItÆs an instinctual thing. Some songs
came right away, but others I kept pushing onàö
ôAll right, IÆm a bit of slave driver,ö David Usher says with
a grin. What heÆs talking about is the recording process for
his latest record, Hallucinations: a virtually non-stop, 4
week recording session with three individual co-producers, in
three different studios located within the Toronto area. Of
course, busy schedules and ongoing deadlines arenÆt exactly
unknown territory for David.
His last record in 2001, the Juno Award winning Morning
Orbit, brought his lifetime sales to well over 1.2 million
records. Its platinum success not only established his
reputation as one of CanadaÆs most uniquely talented
songwriters, it propelled him to new heights. Songs like
ôAlone in the Universeö and the inimitable ôBlack Black
Heartö, (winner of 2 MMVA awards) became instant successes.
Topping Canadian radio and video Charts repeatedly, Morning
Orbit spent 63 consecutive weeks on the Soundscan Top 200
sales chart and provided multiple hits in countries around
the world.
David Usher is notorious for his riveting live performance.
Already a veteran of playing sold out shows for enthusiastic
crowds; he found that each of Morning OrbitÆs 4 singles
brought a host of new fans to his concerts. The electrifying
live set created a greater demand for performances and
appearances than ever before and brought audiences back again
and again.
To put it mildly, his success kept him almost obscenely busy,
but he prefers it that way. After an unprecedented 160 shows
last year in Canada alone, press tours and performances in
Europe and Asia and the better part of 2 full years on the
road, youÆd think David might be inclined to take a break.
Not likely. Only a mere 6 months after stepping off the tour
bus and into his home studio to begin writing new material,
heÆs ready to take Hallucinations, out on the road.
Hallucinations is a seamless blend of recording styles that
covers vast sonic territory. Focusing on each individualÆs
specialty, David intentionally matched specific producers
with specific songs. It is BritainÆs Iestyn Polson (David
Gray), first on the scene at TorontoÆs Metalworks Studios,
who set the tone for the record and raised the bar for his
fellow producers. ôIestyn has a specific sensibility and we
were very in sync about what we liked. HeÆs a little bit
insane, but brilliant. ThatÆs wonderful in a producer and
itÆs freeing to have that kind of person in the environment
to push and pull things in different ways.ö
Perfectly blending production and programming skills on David
GrayÆs White Ladder and New Day At Midnight, IestynÆs vision
meshed flawlessly with DavidÆs. It was a powerful
collaboration. Both have a passion for capturing precise
arrangements and specific hooks that reflect the sentiment of
the songs faithfully and constantly build in intensity.
Nowhere is this more evident than on ôIÆm Coming Downö,
(written only days before recording began) and
ôHallucinations,ö the albumÆs title track.
David describes the song ôHallucinationsö as the turning
point of the record. Featuring lush strings embedded in a
wall of electric guitars, unique loops and a thunderous live
groove, itÆs the place where programming and live æoff the
floorÆ performance first met according to his vision.
ôHallucinationsö is also the lynchpin of the record
thematically: ôA lot of the record is about how difficult it
is to capture moments in time and stay within it. So much of
our life is focused on whatÆs immediately ahead in the
future, or whatÆs immediately behind. Our lives, thereÆs a
wonderful order to them, but thereÆs something wonderful
about chaos as well, about the struggle to live outside the
lines that weÆre given.ö
Long time collaborator and Morning Orbit co-producer, Mark
Makoway, lends his talent for capturing the immediacy of live
performance with tracks like ôSurfacingö and ôFearlessö.
Local ômad scientistö Byron Wong (The Crystal Method) deftly
handles the more ambient tracks û including the contemplative
ôDevil By My Sideö and DavidÆs cover of The Manic Street
PreacherÆs ôTolerate Thisö.
ThereÆs an intimacy to DavidÆs vocals on this record that
gives you the feeling heÆs standing right beside you as he
sings. This is most evident on Hallucinations first single,
ôTime Of Our Livesö. Mixed in NYC by Michael Brauer
(Coldplay, Bob Dylan, Fishbone), ôTime Of Our Livesö speaks
candidly about how a catastrophic personal event can enable
you to understand your life more clearly, only to find that
awareness slipping away as everyday pressures rush back in.
ôIt sounds depressing,ö David laughs. Far from it:
Hallucinations is about finding faith and hope in difficult
times, while recognizing that your reality can shift
underneath you at any time.
ItÆs also about what you personally make of it. Capturing the
fire of his live performance, the record will keep you coming
back over and again, finding something new and captivating
every time. The beauty of DavidÆs writing is his ability to
share a slice of his personal life, speak his mind about
larger issues and still give listeners room to easily find
reflections of their own lives in his words.
ItÆs a talent that has never been so clear as it is on
Hallucinations.
