*Bonus track version includes remixes by Adrian Corker and Daniel Emerson*
Songwriter John Matthias joins forces with modern classical composer Nick Ryan
for this splendid and conceptually ambitious new body of work, incorporating a
host of remixed works from artists like Thom Yorke, The Beta Bnad's John
Maclean, Gabriel Prokofiev and The Verve's Simon Tong. The four-movement
original composition is a fine piece that succeeds at being melodic and
accessible whilst simultaneously preserving an experimental feel, particularly
during the droning, lightly dissonant 3rd movement. The music is "partially
controlled by a tiny computer brain" modelled on a human neuron, which perhaps
explains the more unusual harmonies that occasionally come into play. As for the
remaining pieces, Matthias' old band mate Thom Yorke contributes a great remix
to the selection, taking on a sound that compresses and snips the classical
textures of the original and brings a kind of stuttering, almost
dubstep-flavoured electronic beat into play. The remainder of the tracks all get
into the spirit of things, preserving the 'classical' feel whilst introducing a
healthy amount of electronic dissection. Highly recommended.
