While RMI didn't invent the vocabulary of space music, they certainly
do know how to use it. On their album Zabriskie Point, RMI
offers us a window into one of music's most intimate experiences, the
free-form jam. A notation for this style of music does not
exist. The musicians must have the ability to feel their way through.
It is through these kind of sessions that musicians bond and
demonstrate an almost telepathic connection with their collaborators.
Without any rhythm, harmony or melody to speak of, the
listener becomes absorbed and lost in RMI's reference-less sonic
spell.Dark analogue synth tones colour the mood, carefully played
electric piano notes speak of place and the ever present processed
guitar, wailing, churning, moaning and breathing its accents
and leads stretches the elasticity of the session. (Chuck Van Zyl)
This CD is just awesome. No sequencing, no beats, just trad ambient
like bliss (sic). In fact this term does the album no justice
whatsoever, there is just so much happening. The highlight is the 2nd
track which clocks in at 52 minutes ! Ashra like guitar is
much in evidence here, as the boys surpass themselves (and everyone
else) in constructing one of the finest tracks I've ever
heard. It's swamp music played in the desert! I think I must be
losing it to like an album devoid of sequencing as much as I do
this one. Indeed I'd go as far as to say it's my favourite RMI CD
ever. Highly Recommended (David Elliot)
