Vancouver kids rocket down the side of a rickety skein of Gothic/trash punk aesthetics.
ôDead Endö lurches around in this uptight double-time/half-time rhythm (ôThe Purdie
Shuffleö for the tight black sweater set, maybe), buffeted by snotty vocals and three
whole chords for a good while before breaking into this tight, early JD/JAMC coda û
and believe me, this JAMC thing is starting to become a problem here, but these dudes
sound like theyÆre coming at it simply by banging two ascending notes together really
triumphantly, not like theyÆre swapping out their Æ99 Spock for gaunt æ80s fashion
junkie. Sex Church wins by not being complicated, and riding a beaten-dead formula back
under the lights, winning almost entirely on vibes alone. ôLet Downö does pretty well
for itself too, a snarling dirge of trebly bummer vibes and end of the line lyrics (ôI
just canÆt get out of bedö) that casts coffin shadows toward the great punk downers (like
ôAll Whiteö or ôLiving in Darknessö). Vancouver has shit on lock these days, and seems
to have for a while now. Rarely do I get a record out of there that isnÆt great; then
again, this one shares members of the late lamented Catholic Boys, Defektors, and Vapid,
which have all proven to be pretty great bands.
