Ecstatic Music Of The Jemaa El Fna' is a riveting and
intoxicating document of traditional life in Marrakesh,
capturing renditions of songs from the repertoire of Morocco's
greatest musical exports: Nass El Ghiwane, Lemchaheb, Jil
Jilala, Larssad and more. The tracks feature three central
groups, Amal Saha, Mustapha Mahjoub and Troupe Majidi, with
the latter filling more than half the record. Each band
revolves around a set-up of amplified Oud, banjo and Mandolin
played through speakers powered by car batteries, with
stirring vocals and percussion seemingly attacking from every
direction; from thunderous hand drums to inimitably timed
claps from the crowd. The effect is spectacular, placing us in
the centre of the action with a remarkably clean recording
that allows for all the passion and electricity in the air
while retaining an intimate depth and space. We could bang on
about this for days but we've only got a handful of copies so
we don't want to tease you too much. Awesome record.
