You Know the Rules is the debut album from The Gay, a
five-piece four girls/one boy funpop outfit that comes from
Vancouver, the corner of the globe that hatched recent "it"
band the New Pornographers. With a charming 7" record and a
hugely successful tour opening up for the New Porns
throughout Western Canada as well as an exclusive Seattle
engagement to prime the pump, The Gay present this, an
eleven-song gem high on charm, humour and wit.
Formed in the summer of 2001, The Gay consists of bassist
Coco Culbertson who also plays in Mint recording artists The
Tennessee Twin, accordionist Maija Martin, who's also in
Tennessee Twin; guitarist Tobey Black, the one-time
firebrand leader of Mint cow-punk legends Maow; keyboardist
Sara Lapsley, singer-songwriter for the irresistably catchy
Vancouver Nights and Kreviss; and, last but not least,
drummer Keith Parry, the percussion kingpin behind legendary
Superconductor. together, these folks create pop in the
truest sense, high on fun and blissful joy (a uniquely
inventive concept when you consider the band features an
accordion.)
Produced and recorded in Vancouver by Kurt Dahle of the New
Pornographers at the helm, ably co-piloted by Howard
Redekopp of Veal, you Know the rules is summer and sunshine
pop turned inside out that harkens back to the golden era of
supermusicgroups such as Fleetwood Mac, Sparks (& Beachwood
Sparks!), Heart and the Partridge family. -outside.on.ca
