│ │
│ bristol's full cycle label (dj krust, roni size) sign their │
│ first downbeat artist and leave behind their trademark rolling │
│ drum'n'bass sound for something altogether more relaxing, and │
│ the results are nothing short of perfection. │
│ │
│ mark young (aka third face) hails from hull, his main influences │
│ include massive attack's 'blue lines' and reprazent's 'new │
│ forms' alongside miles davis, marvin gaye and ll cool j. 'topics │
│ in practical science' is a graceful and meaning pirouette │
│ through mark's experiences in jazz, hip-hop, classical, samba, │
│ indian, percussion, soul and drum'n'bass. │
│ │
│ he has marshalled an admirable selection of players and │
│ vocalists, not least, the sultry, etheral tones of audrey │
│ okere-fosu, guitar of david gawthorpe, and horns of pork │
│ favourite bernard moss. the bpm ranges from 60 to 160 with the │
│ focus remaining on the sofa rather than the dancefloor, yet it │
│ retains a deep sense of mind with enough left over for the body. │
│ this is after-hours chillout music, but donÆt expect │
│ vacuousness. │
│ │
│ when new artists reel off their influences it's often hard to │
│ see the connection, but when young says he's been listening to │
│ miles davis, marvin gaye and massive attack, he really has been │
│ listening. hence the cool bass runs, ghostly snatches of vocals, │
│ tinkly pianos and the confidence to let nothing happen when │
│ nothing is what needs to happen. │

│ soup was founded in early 2002, with the intention of releasing
│ the hip-hop, trip-hop, lo-fi and turntablism that has been slept

│ passion for our music, who are fed up of the overly competitive,
│ elitist and aggressive attitude of certain groups.
│
│ soup extend greetings and thanks to everyone at NuHS, and anyone
