"The title refers to our outlooks of life - as a child ones world
can be seen to encompass the locality of streets around ones
home but as experience opens so it includes many more streets,
towns, cities, counties, countries and continents.
With age this outlook can expand, remain static or even contract
with some limiting themselves to one street worlds or even one
room worlds. There is always a choice in this, but realising that
possibility is not always available.
In this respect it follows on from the theme of the first LP -
cities as organic beings providing space to inhabit but also
shaping us and influencing our outlooks. They can be wonderfully
exhilarating and yet also horribly restrictive. We must be aware
of our surroundings and how we interact with them."
The soul, spirit and passion behind Two Banks of Four are Demus
& Rob Gallagher. Formed in 1998, their debut album "City
Watching" was a vanguard release - a leader in the then
emerging "broken beat" sound. But it was more than that. It was
a jazz record pure and simple. Not beholden to any scene, it
extended beyond the confines of journalistic myopia and defined
a new territory. This new territory is now being mapped again by
2bo4. "Three Street Worlds" is the sound of a newly matured,
forward thinking band. Reaching out to draw inspiration from
the classic spiritual jazz of Doug Carne, Azar Lawrence, Strata
East Records and Pharaoh Sanders. They meld these with new
forms and structures to create an exciting, invigorated crucible
of invention and experimentation.
Featuring vocal appearances from Valerie Etienne, Paul Jason
Fredericks and Bembe Segue, Three Street Worlds provides a
platform for some stunning vocal performances. Excellent
musicianship is another hallmark of this album. Chris Bowden,
Ski Oakenfull, Robin Mularkey, Andy Hammill, Chris Storr and
others all contribute to the unique sound that.
Two Banks of Four will be appearing at the MJF with an 11 piece
band, debuting material from the forthcoming album. Three
Street Worlds is released on Red Egyptian Jazz Records in early
