Another Mississippi comp of
international 78s, this time, unlike
"String of Pearls," for instance, there
is really no obvious thread to connect
the disparate styles, except that they
are all excellent tracks, all with some
element to distinguish them from the
generic.
A slight eccentricity here, a rhythmic
idiosyncrasy there, deep, stark beauty
elsewhere... some quality or other
distinguishes every song, which range
from Southeast Asian acappella to USA
country yodeling, to Hawaiian
instrumentals to Spanish Flamenco...
there aren't really any notes other than
the name of the song and (when known)
the artist û no date, no country.
You can do the research yourself, if so
inclined, which in fact I did a little
bit, mostly because "The Arizona
Yodeler" by the Dezurik Sisters is the
most amazing example of yodeling I've
ever heard.(Vocalion, 1938 û the
Dezuriks were from Minnesota and were
regulars on the Grand Ole Opry).
But I think its probable that
information was kept to a minimum on
purpose, as Mississippi has really made
a point of gathering worthwhile music
together on the basis of its intrinsic
value, and not catering to the
collector/academic tendencies which
loves to categorize and sub-categorize
and catalogue and file away music into
more or less arbitrary or circumstantial
little boxes, which is easy enough to do
without even really listening to the
music in question.
That's been the strength and the
distinguishing characteristic of
Mississippi releases, and this one is no
exception.
The cover of this one is remarkable û
very thick, faux-leather cardboard
(similar to old Folkways LPs) with a
painting by Chris Johanson.
