this project takes the already-robust sounds of better daze and
gives them to top producers (e.g., fila brazillia, swingsett &
wally, q-burns abstract message, and thievery corporation) for
further audio enhancement. while the original album ("one street
over") focuses on instrumentation and melody, "remix project" is
definitely a beats excursion.
a favorite for many has been better daze's remake of "golden
brown" by the stranglers; three remixes are featured here, each of
them a new angle on ambient beats. badmarsh kicks drum and bass
flavor into "stay right here" very nicely, adding a good bit of
sass to the pretty track. our favorite, however, is better daze's
own remix of "i dreamed my dentist was yusef lateef": fat bass,
beats, and electro-funk all the way, with a minute-or-so interlude
to make you jones for more. the future of music is before us. keep
an eye out on all of these producers.
better daze partners andrew jervis and paul scriver first met up
when scriver, saxophonist and leader of soul jazz band neomythic,
came on to jervis' friday night radio show on college station
kusf. discovering that they both had an interest in mixing samples
and live instrumentation, they decided to try to work together.
"i wanted to make something that incorporated all of the new
things that were going on [in music] but in a jazzy, musical way
so that there's depth to it and it's not just a breakbeat and a
loop. we were definitely interested in keeping some live stuff in
there that had some kind of improvisation or spontaneity,"
explains jervis.
in the studio, jervis and scriver took inspiration from the deep
vibes of musicians like pharoah sanders, dj shadow, courntey pine,
portishead, and goldie. "andrew brings in records to listen to for
inspiration ... very often we'll take small pieces of them, layer
a lot, and then start stripping away the layers," says scriver.
"it's kinda like painting with a spatula, like later kandinsky
work, where he was layering and layering and then he would just
scrape away layers and get an incandescent quality."
with the "remix project," we get quite a few more artists adding
to the musical palette. ambient hip hop masters fila brazillia
from the uk lend their melodic beats to the group's cover of
"golden brown"; orlando, florida's q-burns abstract message takes
the already-beat-heavy "modus operandi" and does his abstract
thing; and washington dc's thievery corporation add a little
ragamuffin style to "heavenly sweetness," better daze's beautiful
remake of the byard lancaster song.
