Paco Pe±a has few rivals in the world of flamenco guitar and Flamenco
Master offers a good introduction to his passionate art. He's well known
to British audiences for his regular stage spectaculars that involve many
other musicians and dancers, but this compilation focuses largely on Pe±a
the soloist, drawing on four of the best albums he recorded for the now
defunct Nimbus label in the late 80s and early 90s. Of these, only the
material from Encuentro Paco Pe±a y Eduardo Fal· and the somewhat
overrated Misa Flamenca feature vocal accompanists--in the case of the
latter, a whole choir of singers from the Academy of Saint Martin in the
Fields Chorus.
Groundbreaking, but a little pompous, it's his least typical record as
such, since he's known as much more of a traditionalist than, say, a nuevo
flamenco innovator like Paco de Lucφa. Pe±a nonetheless brings his own
distinctive stamp to songs fro! m flamenco's "public domain" and
compositions by past masters like Ram≤n Montoya and Ni±o Ricardo, who were
his chief musical role models. Apart from covering the main Andalucian
forms such as bulerias, alegrias and soleares, Pe±a shows a welcome
affinity with the folk music forms of South America in the pieces with
Argentinian singer Fal·, who has a pleasant vocal style. Two of the tracks
taken from the Azahara album feature Tito Losada as a second guitarist,
but for Pe±a out on his own, check the stark beauty of "Zambra", "Acera
del Rio" or "La Rosa." - Jon Lusk http://www.amazon.co.uk
