| I saw somewhere the comment that Brussels-based label Sub Rosa |
| were the best thing to come out of Belgium since Plastic |
| Bertrand. This, the second compilation of their "anthology", is |
| certainly pretty impressive. Well packaged, brimming with |
| interesting information on the artists and composers featured, |
| this is necessarily only a flavour, a sampler of the vast array |
| of obscure electronic music that has emerged over the last |
| seventy years or so. Listening to it is a bit like being in a |
| decent art gallery, short on space and with a limited budget - |
| "Gosh there's a Rousseau! Wish I could see another one!", "Oh |
| look, it's a Rothkoàbut not the one I really want to see." |

| Where these discs succeed is in their inclusion of rare and |
| unpublished works - the thirty something minutes of Pauline |
| Oliveros' 'A Little Noise In The System', featured on the first |
| compilation, is a triumph. The Gentle Fire recording of Hugh |
| Davies' marvellous 'Quintet', a highlight of this second |
| compilation, is equally impressive - particularly given that it |
| was composed and recorded in the late sixties, before most of the |
| current crop of feedback manipulators were out of nappies. The |
| compilation also does well in that it contains decent music by |
| people you've never heard of, in my case Johanna M. Beyer, Lasse |
| Steen and Daphne Oram, as well as music you've never heard by |
| acts you know and love: Autechre, Laibach, Yoshihiro Hanno. The |
| inclusion of tracks by Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart, both |
| brilliant, but not very noisy and not very electronic, is a |
| little puzzling. It's also a pity there's no true noise music |
| here: a snatch of Prurient would not have gone amiss. Nonetheless |
| this painstakingly compiled, thoughtful and absorbing compilation |
| is, in common with its sister disc, essential listening for |
| anybody wishing to live long enough to be able to tell their |
| grandchildren what decent music sounded like in the twentieth |
| century. |
