▐█ ALBUM iNFORMATION █▌
█▄ ▄▓
▀▓███▓█▓██████████▓███▀
To an uninitiated listener, it may seem odd
that Montreal's Julie Doiron warrants a
tribute album. To many others, however, it
seems long overdue. Doiron, who began her
musical career as the bassist in the iconic
Moncton, New Brunswick outfit Eric's Trip,
has since become one of the most significant
singer-songwriters in contemporary indie
circles, her hushed confessionals and warm
stage personality a beacon to both the
achingly romantic and the reservedly
intellectual. Thankfully, the people behind
the Hamilton, Ontario / Belgium-based
Paperheart Music imprint have collected
colleagues and committed fans for a batch of
covers that perfectly express the charm and
magnetism of Doiron and her songs.
Doiron has slowly and steadily compiled a
nearly bulletproof discography that has
refined and re-confirmed her artistic vision
through intensely personal, intensely
intelligent and intensely pretty ballads.
Complex melodic systems, syncopated rhythmic
structures and daunting dynamic vocal
performances are a signpost of her songs,
while her diary-like lyrics capture photo
realistic moments of her home life, her love
life and her loving relationship with her
three small children (all of whom take turns
as leading players in her lyrical
narratives).
Almost every one of Doiron's albums is
equally represented here (the brilliant
French-language Desormais (2001) has sadly
been ignored, despite the fact several of
the artists that appear here are
Francophones) -- further testament to
Doiron's continual maturation. Even Broken
Girl (1996), the cautious debut that
suffered at times from Doiron's then-modesty
as a guitarist, is embraced, and provides
some of the tribute's most potent material.
The Soft Eyes' rendition of "Waiting for
Baby" is a tearjerker that should
immediately attract some deserved attention
for the Stockholm-based trio. Acoustic
guitar, banjo and synthesizer build slowly
in intensity that parallels the lyrical
theme of anticipation and excitement at the
impending arrival of a newborn (the child in
question would be Doiron's first). Super XX
Man (aka Scott Garred, ex-Silver Scooter)
tackles the sugary "Sweeter"; the
interesting parallel here is with one of
Doiron's home country admirers, namely
Toronto's Hayden, who shares Garred's
glassy-eyed bedroom drawl. Instrumentation
is kept to a single acoustic guitar and
voice until Garred begins digitally
manipulating the tune's texture and adding
layers of harmonizing vocal tracks;
eventually, a single piano line enters the
mix during a brokenhearted, mid-song
crescendo, as Garred repeats "What can I do
to make this change?"
Equally impressive and far more courageous
is Mark Raymond's take on "Gone, Gone", one
of the most stunning tracks from Doiron's
collaboration with the now-defunct Wooden
Stars, Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars
(2000), which netted a Canadian Juno Award
(our humble equivalent to the Grammy) and
launched the solo Doiron out of the tightly
knit circuit in which she had previously
resided, and into the North American and
European indie scenes. Raymond, whose voice
is a reasonable mirror of Stars frontman
Mike Feuerstack (who performed the harmonies
and lead guitar on the original), aches and
awes while a dizzying stereo mix synthesizes
and severs a layered system of guitars.
It should come as no surprise, however, that
the single strongest track on All Their
Broken Hearts comes from Doiron's frequent
collaborator and kindred spirit Feuerstack,
under his long-standing Snailhouse moniker.
Snailhouse's rendition of "Again, Again"
from 1999's Will You Still Love Me? EP is
haunting in its ability to capture the
song's original emotions and infuse them
with an immediacy and intensity that
supersedes the source. A single acoustic
guitar and Feuerstack's trademark fragile
croon create a warmth quickly echoed by
vibes spinning through the stereo field, a
brilliant aural corollary to the confusion
felt by the songwriter's failure in love
("What could be worse than this? / I have
never been in such a mess / Maybe I'm not
good for much / And maybe I should have told
you /And maybe you would care / But regret
will never make it work"). Sequenced at the
midpoint of the tracklist, Snailhouse's
cover effectively functions as the backbone
to a strong and stirring set of material.
In the end, the greatest compliment to All
Their Broken Hearts is that it doesn't leave
you itching for the original Julie Doiron
material, but stands on its own as a
compelling document illustrating the
contributors' keen interest in expressing
their admiration for Doiron, and their hope
that any opportunity to expose her material
to a (growing) audience is reason enough to
do so.

aAF was created in Jan 2001 to fill a void left in the scene
by groups who would refuse to release anything but current
year music.Well since that time we have been rocking the
scene with classic rock rips.We have made classic music
mainstream in the scene and have been on top in that area as
the number one group in classic rips. We finished 2001 with
3800 rips.As we moved forward in 2002 we found we were also
releasing alot of quality 2k2 rips and saw that we were competing
in that area.In 2002 we finished with over 5000 rips.In 2003 we
plan to move forward and continue to release "THE NEW STUFF" and
strive to be on top in 2k3 rips.We will also continue to remain
on top like we have for 2 years in the classic rock scene.
It's not the Year that Matters it's the Music
aAF Forever
