To shine some more light on the diverse
career of cartoonist Ralph Bakshi we present
another of his lesser known films: Coonskin.
A daring exploration of African American culture
in the 70s, ranging from African folk tales to
the work of cartoonist George Herriman, Coonskin
satirizes racist stereotypes, as well as the
blaxploitation genre, Song of the South, and
The Godfather. The film drew so much criticism
before its theatrical debut, by those who had yet
to see it, that it was only given a limited
release and received primarily negative reviews.
It wasn't until its rerelease under different
titles that it began to get the attention it
deserves.
Scatman Crothers performs the opening song
called "Ah'm a Nigger Man" with lyrics written
by Bakshi himself. "Ah'm the minstrel man/Ah'm
the cleaning man/Ah'm the poor man/Ah'm the shoe
shine man/Ah'm a Nigger Man/Watch me Dance!" As
you can imagine it was all a little much for
the freshly post-civil-rights-movement 70s
and the looming politically correct 80s.
Unfortunately none of the VHS copies of
Coonskin do Bakshi's artwork justice. One need
only to visit his official site and look at
actual animation cels to see the huge difference
in what was released for the public. We originally
sourced this in VHS form only to find it in less
than desirable condition. We then decided to
▄█▓▀▄ check out the bootleg DVD from Blax Films and ▄▀▓█▄
▐█▌ ■ found it to be slightly better than our own ■ ▐█▌
█▓ VHS. No great source of Coonskin exists yet to ▓█
██ our knowledge so while this is overly dark and ██
░█▓ likely off in colors its still about as good ▓█░
▄██▓██ as it gets. It appears Bakshi has more than ██▓██▄
▐▀ ▀██▌ once attempted to clear up the confusion over ▐██▀ ▀▌
■ █▌ ownership and distribution rights for this lost ▐█ ■
▒█ classic but as of yet to no avail. █▒
