Release.Info :
Duke Robillard was already an excellent, tasteful guitarist when he founded
Roomful of Blues in the late '60s. Since he left Roomful in the late '70s,
Robillard has played blues, jazz, swing and more. He's only gotten better.
Boston area-based Sunny Crownover is a real-deal vocalist with Texas roots and
a band called the Joy Boys, which includes Robillard.
With "Tiki," Robillard and Crownover pay tribute to Les Paul and Mary Ford with
a collection of songs, many from the Paul/Ford repertoire, and with the kind of
inventive recording techniques that Paul pioneered.
But the stars of the disc are Crownover's voice, Robillard's guitars and a song
list that includes standards ("Besame Mucho," "Smoke Rings) and surprises
("Occidental Woman," "Put the Blame on Mame"). Marty Ballou's bass work and
Mark Teixeira's percussion are value-added.
There'll never be substitutes for natural cool, well-honed chops and hip tunes.
"Tales from the Tiki Lounge" stands as proof. And guitar/recording freaks will
love Robillard's song notes.
