Its house Jim, but not as we know it! Well, sort of. Actually it's a
lot more than house, and it's a lot more exciting than electronic
soul, and it's difficult because there aren't many well-worn phrases
that do it justice.
It's Love Crisis, and it's the debut album from the highly talented,
cavalier Mr. William Threlfall, or Williams, the name he'll be known
for producing one of the best house-ish albums of the year under.
It's a big sound, very big. And it's funky, soulful and extremely
new. Making use of the long-preferred-by-the-leftfield proper
technique of taking tiny samples, not loops, and using them as
building blocks for a much bigger picture, Williams has opened up a
whole new ground musically.
At times finding a funk that's as fresh as the proverbial daisy, and
at others riding a downright dirtiness that'll have the most polite
listener sneering at his mum, fun is a big part of this album, but
that's not to say that it isn't seriously musically accomplished.
Returning to that favourite phrase, electronic soul, we'd really have
to say that this is an electronic record, with a very big soul.
Williams has a feel for mood, subtlety and delicacy of touch that's
lacking in even the best producers working today, and as a result,
Love Crisis ranges and changes fluidly, whilst always remaining Love
Crisis.
There, some not very new phrases, but a very new sound, which is the
whole point really.
Ain't no crisis it's a love thing.
