pulp flavor recordings is a french independent label dealing with
the production, the edition, the promotion and the distribution of
electronic musics (in vinyl et cd) : trip hop, abstract hip hop,
down tempo, dub, drum& bass, jungle...
end of 1996 : in charge of the promotion for polygram, thierry
balzan creates pulp flavor recordings.
march 1997 : signature of the money penny project and release of
the first ep untitled 1st pfr world athletics championships. james
lavelle, director of the label mo wax loves the single and orders
a remix for one of his artist club to death. dave hill from the
label nuphonic signs under an english licence with the title
clarisse c, he will do 2 remixes arranged by andy weaterhall. the
support of these 3 icons of electronic music will make us more
popular in england than france.
september 1997 : the 2nd ep of the money penny project is released
titled delicatessen. pulp flavor confirms his status in england
and france starts to realise the potential... !
november 1997 : pulp flavor takes some risks and sign under
licence a band from stockholm : growin pains some old school hip
hop rapped in english. a single a hundred times more advanced than
most of what was played at this time in france, but ends up being
a commercial flop...
december 1997 : the new wounded sign and release a 2 track ep.
success in france and good sales in england and japan
march 1998 : signature of dj brain, a young hip hop composer from
grenoble. release of a 4 track ep including two tracks boosted by
two american rappers. the swiss radio station couleur 3 gets it
straight into his charts and radio nova sends congratulations
notes through the fax...
may 1998 : laurent "lorenzo" gaudin, a club and radio deejay,
suggests and takes the responsability of the dare-dare division
dedicated to the republishing of rare french and european
"groove". in june release of the first production on dare-dare, la
guΩpe volume 1, a compilation offering a trip through the french
groovy between 1967 and 1982.
june, july, september 1998 : recording and mixing of the first
album of the money penny project.
october, november 1998 : steps are taken for the promotion of the
album. it seems to be taking off...
january 1999 : release of the album. full cover pages in the
press, trax, coda, les inrock, l'affiche, technikart... album of
the month in magic! the following month money penny project shares
the cover of magic! with le tone, cassius and bang bang. sales go
up. after a month of exploitation 2500 copies are sold in france.
february 1999 : reissue on dare-dare of paris soul the album of
ben & the platano group originally issue on barclay in 1971. the
english adore it, japan imports 1000 copies and the french
rediscover. before the reissue original copies were sold for a
fortune in the collectors market.
march 1999 : first video clip of the money penny project. arranged
by alligator design associΘs the exclusive graphic agency of the
label. in night rotation on m6 and mcm. the album is still selling
well and some major companies start seriously looking into it,
interrested by both the label and the artist. sales are reaching
6000 copies, it's produced by an independant label and spread
through an independant distributor (cyber prod), on est pas peu
fier !
april 1999 : release of the first single from the money penny
project lp : projection privΘe including 2 remixes by feneh borg
and avia, including a previously unplayed track.
release on dare-dare of la guΩpe vol 2 - deep indide the french
library music, a track listing highly appreciated by the english
press...
may, june 1999 : signature under licence of chris joss with a
single planned for september and an album named the man with a
suitcase - for december. signature of frederic cole tinteroff with
an ep to be released in september.
july 1999 : release on dare-dare (in vinyl only) of the 3rd volume
of la guΩpe called bananaticoco dealing with brazilian flavor from
europe. the cd is planned for september. signature of ego, a
parisian duo...
october 1999 : release of the first ep of frΘdΘric cole tinteroff.
a young producer from toulouse who spends every night torturing
his sampler in order to build around a single beat basslines and
scratches which make up the essence of his music. a music clear
and purified that sends us back to its source: rhythm.
october 1999 : release of the first 12'' of chris joss & his
orchestra. one of the title " bombay by bus " will be licenced by
the bbc 2 for a new tv broadcast . another title is licenced by
the german label unique.
december 1999 : release of the first lp of chris joss & his
orchestra " the man with a suitcase ". a record influenced amongst
other things by the revival of 60's & 70's soundtracks on the
london underground scene. a concept album delivered by this multi
instrumentist from la rochelle after 7 years of london adventures.

december 1999 : peugeot use the title " french is beautiful " from
the money penny project album for its " peugeot 206 " tv
commercial.
january 1999 : signature of the big knife a duo from brest.
preview on la pulp : the title " mrs castle " from the forthcoming
lp on pulp.
february 2000 : signature of ego a duo from paris (a girl, a boy).

march 2000 : signature of the odd couple from stockholm and
laurent paul a parisian producer. comin' soon on pulp flavor...
april 2000 : esl the american label created by thievery
corporation wants to take the chris joss lp under licence.
negotiations are in progress.
may 2000 : release of the 12'' salomΘ by carnel. " she's loud " of
chris joss will be on the next irma compilation.
