██▓▓ release their second collection of audio ██▓▓
██▓▓ interventions, STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENTS. ULTRA ██▓▓
██▓▓ RED follows up their debut CD SECOND NATURE ██▓▓
██▓▓ with a new CD that turns an electro-acoustic ██▓▓
██▓▓ ear toward the massive demolition of a ██▓▓
██▓▓ public housing community in the ██▓▓
██▓▓ predominantely Latino East Los Angeles. ██▓▓
██▓▓ Since November 97, ULTRA RED has cruised the ██▓▓
██▓▓ neighborhoods of East LAÆs Pico Aliso and ██▓▓
██▓▓ Aliso Village housing projects with ██▓▓
██▓▓ microphone in hand. ULTRA REDÆs interest in ██▓▓
██▓▓ the projects began after hooking up with the ██▓▓
██▓▓ Union de Vecinos, an organization of public ██▓▓
██▓▓ housing residents struggling for democratic ██▓▓
██▓▓ housing policy and fair treatment from LAÆs ██▓▓
██▓▓ Housing Authority. The central contention ██▓▓
██▓▓ for the residents has been the Housing ██▓▓
██▓▓ AuthorityÆs plan to demolition all 1284 ██▓▓
██▓▓ units in the area and reconstruct only half ██▓▓
██▓▓ that number for low-income residents. ██▓▓
██▓▓ Attending demonstrations,meetings with the ██▓▓
██▓▓ House Authority and the City Council as well ██▓▓
██▓▓ as numerous interviews with the residence ██▓▓
██▓▓ themselves, ULTRA RED amassed hours of site ██▓▓
██▓▓ recordings. These recordings became the ██▓▓
██▓▓ basis for the tracks that appear on ██▓▓
██▓▓ STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENTS. STRUCTURAL ██▓▓
██▓▓ ADJUSTMENTS directly challenges the trend ██▓▓
██▓▓ within electronic music to fetishize ██▓▓
██▓▓ architecture. Provocatively, ULTRA RED ██▓▓
██▓▓ argues for a shift away from electronicaÆs ██▓▓
██▓▓ fascination with architecture toward the ██▓▓
██▓▓ exigenies of housing.Stemming from ULTRA ██▓▓
██▓▓ REDÆs collaboration with the Union de ██▓▓
██▓▓ Vecinos, all the tracks take as their sole ██▓▓
██▓▓ sound sources those digital audio recordings ██▓▓
██▓▓ made in the projects.These recordings were ██▓▓
██▓▓ then processed, edited and composed by ULTRA ██▓▓
██▓▓ RED members Marco æRed LeaderÆ Larsen and ██▓▓
██▓▓ Dont Rhine. The music itself ranges in ██▓▓
██▓▓ approach from manipulated soundscapes, ██▓▓
██▓▓ electroacoustic bricolage, dubby low-end ██▓▓
██▓▓ work outs and electronic pop. The CD closes ██▓▓
██▓▓ with the ten minute æArchitecture versus ██▓▓
██▓▓ HousingÆ, featuring recordings from the ██▓▓
██▓▓ infamous 24 July 99 occupation of the ██▓▓
██▓▓ projects when ULTRA-RED joined with the ██▓▓
██▓▓ Union de Vecinos in a pirate broadcast while ██▓▓
██▓▓ guerilla video and slide projections by the ██▓▓
██▓▓ Union and visual artist Valerie Tevere ██▓▓
██▓▓ covered the walls of the condemned housing. ██▓▓
██▓▓ STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENTS reveals a ██▓▓
██▓▓ ground-breaking strategy in deploying modern ██▓▓
██▓▓ electro-acoustic and experimental electronic ██▓▓
