Having taken up residency in the upper echelons of 2009's end-of-year
charts, The XX enter into the new year with the release of 'VCR', one of
the sweeter pop tracks off their acclaimed debut. While much of the album
has a certain nocturnal allure to it, this single combines chipper,
twanging guitar riffs with toy piano melodies to channel a more upbeat
temperament. A Rodaidh remix of 'Insects' crops up on the B-side, which is
another mini-masterpiece of cinematic simplicity - and singer Romy Madley
Croft sounds uncannily like Kim Gordon.
