Release Notes:
Boasting a new line-up, a new sense of purpose and a new album destined
to blow the roof off 2010, LondonÆs Union Sound Set rise from the still
flaming ashes of hotly-tipped soar-rockers Prego.
Having completed tours with the likes of The Boxer Rebellion, The
Stills, Red Light Company, People In Planes and Fightstar last year,
the band took on a new guitarist Dan Best and drummer Alex Walker and
set about recording their incredible debut album æStart StopÆ, due for
release in October on Mighty Atom and produced by Manics and
Spiritualized knob-twiddler Guy Massey.
They have kindly answered a few questions for usàà
Which artists would you say have held influence on you and your work?
The artists that are most influential to us span from bands like Death
Cab for Cutie, Aereogramme and The National, to more experimental
post-rock bands like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky and Mono.
We love great thought out melodies first and foremost I think, and all
the above create these with abundance.
So, yr bandÆs namesake, whatÆs it all about?
The name Union Sound Set comes from the idea of a community of sound
really. WeÆre a close bunch of guys who love making music that
hopefully in some way challenges and moves people. The word Union
suggests to us a coming together of people and hopefully in our case
the common cause for this is the music we make.
Video seems to be your media of choice, any reason for this?
Well I think weÆve always seen visuals alongside music as something can
compliment it greatly, and create an extended experience of music
really, and some of our biggest influences, most notalbly Sigur Ros use
video incredibly. We have some great friends who make amazing videos and
weÆre just about to embark on the video for our debut single which
weÆre excited about.
What is the most nervous / disastrous performance youÆve had?
Well the most nervous performance weÆve had was supporting at a sold
out ShepherdÆs Bush Empire, we were all terrified but it was also the
most amazing show we could have imagined. The most disastrous was at a
festival when our bassist broke a string and had come unprepared with
any spares. He had to disappear mid set to try and salvage the
situation, it was a nightmare.
At present who are the most interesting artists in world?
I think the most interesting artists currently out there judging on
recent releases are the likes of The National, theyÆre latest release
æHigh VioletÆ is increible. WeÆve also been listening to JonsiÆs
amazing album, EfterklangÆs album is great, and weÆre all big fans of
the latest Phoenix album. What makes an interesting artist to us is one
that is in no way recreating the wheel, and I think has an honesty
about what they do. The music industry is a very fickle trend led
place, so to pursue what youÆre doing because you genuinally love and
believe in it, and not because youÆre trying to fit within the box that
the industry creates for you is a very rare thing and I think more and
more bands are sadly giving up because itÆs become far harder to
sustain a musical career of any sort. I think the majority of the bands
mentioned above have built fan bases over a long period with numerous
album releases that have had had great integrity and depth, and they
are still making great albums today
Do you have any plans to play the UK in the future?
WeÆre currently sorting dates to coincide with our album release, and
will be touring extensively around the UK in the autumn.
In a perfect world whom would you like to work with (alive or dead) and
why?
I think IÆd have to answer this personally as weÆd all say different
people. If there was an artist I was able to work with itÆd probably be
Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie, I think heÆs a phenomenal song
writer, the best lyricist IÆve ever heard and I think Death Cab are one
of those bands who deserves to be where they are and have released
great record after great record. On top of that having a side project
as innovative as The Postal Service warrants great credit. In terms of
an artist whoÆs not around anymore, itÆd have to be Elliott Smith, one
of the greatest songwriters of all time in my opinion.
