"soulstance are gianni & vincenzo lo greco, this is their second
release under that guise on schema and to put it bluntly, it's a
bloody good album. top notch production and a sound that emanates
enormous amounts of atmospheric backdrops while still hitting a
danceable & thus dj enticing beat. you could at times be mistaken
for thinking you are listening to an internal bass release but no,
this is truely the sound of italian jazz grooves.
kicking off the set we have a kind of spiritual composition created
with a haunting flute, deep bass & all kinds of singing crickets
casting a sensation of star gazing through leaves of palm tree-tops
on a deserted caribbean beach. following up is 'the aftermath of
love', a more upbeat whirring urban groove with sweeping strings &
gentle keys, previously released.
'essential spices' features plenty of cosmic background sound
effects & again a deep bassline with flute but this time the
uptempo kick is provided by a sparse skipping beat which to my ears
is not too dissimilar to that found on uk 2-step garage tracks.
'kickin samba' as you would expect is a cosmic samba with all the
horns & percussion you need - a real snake-hips tchoon this one.
slowing things down a touch or two is 'inspired By antonio carlos',
a laid back fusion smoothie as might be expected from the title
with nice brazillian jazz elements in attendance.
possibly two of the standouts are in the bossa magic of 'mutantes'
& 'grasping' where vibes dominate ably backed by snapping bass &
sprightly keys. 'court intrigues' incorporates many jazz elements
to good effect but it's the funky jazz guitar that sets this out as
a laid back groove. from the moment the title track 'act on' kicks
off, with a flute that obviously means business you know it's going
to build into something heavy so a thumping bass comes as no real
surprise in this urban groove. following up 'riding the mambo' has
sexy vocals over bouncing chill out beats with a nice touch of jazz
guitar added for flavour - one of my faves & what I'd call happy
music." - soul junkie
