Release Notes:
In 1997 Grave Digger released one of its most successful albums up to
date in æTunes Of WarÆ. This was also the first conceptual album for
the German heavy metal brigade and a line they followed on the
following records æKnights Of The CrossÆ and æExcalibiurÆ. æTunes Of
WarÆ however, was an album base on and in honour of the heroic, yet
bloody tale of William Wallace (a.k.a. Braveheart) and thirteen years
after its release it still is a milestone. The band is celebrating its
thirtieth anniversary this year and does that on an appropriate manner
and with style. First of all the band played a special show on this
yearÆs edition of Wacken Open Air, playing the æTunes Of WarÆ album in
its entirety. Looking at the background flag of that show, which
expressed the cover artwork of the new album æThe Clans Will Rise
AgainÆ, the show was also a preview and a warm-up of the bandÆs newest
creation.
The two previous releases, 'Liberty Or Death' and æBallads Of A
HangmanÆ, were two quite different albums and as you can read in my
review, I was quite charmed with æBallads Of A HangmanÆ. So I was
rather curious about how the album would turn out. On the one hand I
had the modern approach of æBalladsàÆ in the back of the head, on the
other hand the progressive approach of æLibertyàÆ and of course I
wondered if the band was about to fall back on the success of æTunes Of
WarÆ. Next to that I was also particularly curious about the current
situation in the band, because this is the first album without
guitarist and one of the important composers Manni Schmidt! However,
The band has found a worthy replacement in Axel ôIronfingerö Ritt,
known form the magnificent Domain. Well, Ritt had already proved to be
a perfect match for Grave Digger on stage, but seeing the fact that
with Domain he has a totally different, more progressive style and
approach, I was wondering if those influences would also be heard on
æThe ClansàÆ
Well now, the album takes of with a bagpipe intro and immediately
summons the atmosphere of æTunes Of WarÆ and sounds very trusted. When
the band burst out with æPaid In BloodÆ, IÆm again blown away by the
tight and hard rocking heavy metal in the well-known, typical Grave
Digger style! The immediate striking point is the raw, old-fashioned
and honest guitar sound. No modern signs or progressive escapades, but
catchy straightforward heavy metal. Grave Digger has, also thanks to
Chris BoltendahlÆs unique voice, always been a recognisable band and
æThe Clans Will Rise AgainÆ is not an exception to that rule. What am I
saying? On this album is the band even more recognisable than the two
previous albums! The bandÆs strength lies mostly in catchy riffs and
choruses and æThe ClansàÆ is filled wit exactly that. In general the
album has fallen out faster and more aggressive, which in my opinion is
only positive. However, the band doesnÆt march on full speed at all
times, but also comes up with powerful, pompous mid-tempo head bangers
such as æComing HomeÆ and æWhen The Rain Turns To BloodÆ.
The new force Axel Ritt is a real shining star on the album and with
his fantastic guitar wizardry he has lifted the band up to an even
higher level. The album is a true climax from the beginning to the end
and I canÆt name a single moment on which the album might show any sign
of weakness. I honestly didnÆt expect saying this after æBallads Of A
HangmanÆ, but Grave Digger has truly and fully outdone themselves and
that album. With this effort the band has also proved to be still be
highly enthusiastic and energetic after three decades and that they
definitely have the right to exist. As far as IÆm concerned this is a
must for every self-respecting heavy metal maniac. But I also must warn
you that the album will be stuck in your player for the coming few
weeks as it is highly addictive!
