| battle music for nano-samurai. thatÆs xanopticon. |
| not really, but itÆs not too far-fetched, either. liminal space, |
| xanopticonÆs debut album for hymen records, centers around |
| nanometer-sized sound snippets placed one-by-one in perfect |
| order, creating a mesmerizing fight scene between clangs and |
| clacks, snaps and pops, noise and thunder. like microscopic |
| swords locking in a martial ballet of darkstep rhythms, liminal |
| space unleashes a bevy of cunning musical forms meant to be as |
| much art as it is confrontation. |
| "in some sense itÆs a snapshot of my life, in that writing tracks |
| is always sort of like purging yourself and whatever ideas have |
| been floating about in your mind", says xanopticonÆs ryan |
| friedrich of liminal space. comparisons run the |
| break/dark/techcore gamut from panacea to venetian snares to |
| black mass plastics, but the trait that sets xanopticonÆs brand |
| of power breaks apart from his peers is the degree to which dead |
| silence plays a pivotal role in conveying his musical ideas. |
| "iÆve always thought that dynamics are extremely important", says |
| ryan. "i try to make the tracks sort of narrative, albeit |
| abstractly, so thereÆs always an attempt to place moments of calm |
| and different moods amongst the chaos. the spaces between add |
| weight to harder parts and vice versa - a track is sort of like |
| an animal when its done and it needs room to breathe." |
| ryan, a pittsburgh, pennsylvania native who recently completed |
| studies in film and philosophy, likens this breathing room to the |
| film noir-related term liminal space, whence the album name |
| derives. ryan remarks thereÆs a quote from his film studies that |
| best sums up Æthe paradox of liminal spaceÆ: Æthe moment when |
| borders become porous, structures disintegrate, commonplaces |
| collide and stability is subverted by the occult drive of |
| change.Æ |
| what that means for xanopticon is a little more concrete. liminal |
| space functions on a premise of silent veneers punctuated by a |
| panoply of different sounds. symphwrakÆs accelerated industrial |
| bass toms pierce a wavering metallized plane like so much grenade |
| shrapnel through an aluminum shed; constant, on the other hand, |
| with its finely isolated and matte tonality, suggests a manic |
| industrial chopping machine, where everything from snaps to |
| croinks to breaks fall julienned in uniform fashion. the more |
| dramatic synth overtones and delicate beat structures of drunxpla |
| connote the sense of a grand sword battle between seasoned |
| warlords, an orchestration of tight percussion quanta clashing |
| with violence, yet tempered with strategy. |
| the music of xanopticon began to fester inside ryan in 2000 for a |
| few reasons: his passion for messing around with electronics and |
| other technology until it did something interesting, which goes |
| back to his teenage years; and an inability to find the kind of |
| music he wanted to hear. today, what with the midwestern hardcore |
| scene taking off, the latterÆs less of a problem, making it |
| easier for xanopticon to find outlets on hymenÆs masonic |
| compilation, sssÆs circuits of steel, a 7-inch on mirex, azif, |
| and a forthcoming 7-inch on kid606Æs tigerbeat6 imprint. |
| "the motivation for me", he says, "is always sort of the same - i |
| just want to write tracks that i want to hear and that get me |
| excited, physically and mentally. partially itÆs an attempt to |
| write tracks that click in a certain way and break through to |
| something else, some other space." exactly: xanopticon breaks |

: Founded in 1998 by a bunch of german geeks, UBE was one of the :
| first groups in the mp3 scene, when only a dirty dozen of them |
| were there. Ever since we did quality releases, instead of |
| focusing on quantity like it is done by most groups today. |
| UBE is a group of friends, friendly and open-minded, and so we |
| seek for new friends, not just ripping machines. And we are |
| probably the group doing the most parties ;) |
| When you apply you have to be a little bit patient, |
| we need some time to get to know you. |
| Over time we have grown to a quite big group with nearly 50 |
| Members, scattered all over the world, but most of them from |
| Germany. |
| In UBE there is no duty to release something, we don't force our |
| members into releasing a specific amount, since this only leads |
| to crappy releases. Stuff you can buy at some gas station is not |
| really worth ripping. |
| Besides releasing you can help us in many ways, we seek for |
| programming experts, linux gurus,security experts and (legit) |
| shell providers as well, just to name some examples. |
| In addition, UBE membership doesn't expire, we don't kick idle |
| friends. If you can behave you will stay with us forever, so |
| don't ever try to take advantage of our friendly attitude. |
| And, in UBE is no place for racism or other kinds of extremists, |
| and if you are some ego please go somewhere else. |
| We have no public channel, anyone hanging around in some 'ube' |
| channel doesn't belong to us. |
| People should care a lot more about their and other people's |
| security. |
| Get educated and think before you start to talk or even act. |
| There is a growing gap between the ones that do think about |
| security and the ones that don't, try to avoid a split. |
