Angus Robinson
Having put his first needle to record in front of a live
crowd while a student at Western University in London,
Canada back in 1998, it's taken Angus Robinson a very
short time indeed to climb the breakbeat ranks of his
hometown of Toronto and, for that matter, all of Canada.
After relocating from London to Toronto, Angus was
quickly identified for his unique and extraordinarily
advanced track selection by one of the world's top
record stores, Release Records (www.releaserecords.com),
to head up their online ordering platform and to handle
all of their breakbeat record purchasing.
His position at Release Records has ensured that Angus
is always armed to the teeth with the freshest selection
of new tunes, promos, and CDRs, the likes of which are
in very high demand among fellow DJs.
From there it was only a matter of time before Angus,
who was being billed under his Madhatter alias at the
time, became a staple of the breakbeat scene in Toronto
where his nu school breakbeat influences went against,
and allowed him to stand out from, the funky breaks that
were the norm.
In his DJing career, Angus has held residencies at Turbo
(Funglejunk Tuesdays), Limelight (Lift Wednesdays),
Fever in Hamilton (Backbreakers Fridays), Milano's
(B-Line Thursdays), Lush in London (Throwdown
Wednesdays), Tonic (FTWK Wednesdays), The Blue Room in
London (Aftershock Wednesdays), Bauhaus (3D Saturdays),
as well as a prestigeous residency with
Breathe/Futurized at System Soundbar that saw Angus play
alongside such DJs as Meat Katie, Koma & Bones, Jody of
Way out West, DJ Hyper, Starecase, and more.
In October 2002, Angus launched Futurized Radio on New
York's protonradio.com, and it instantly became a hit
amongst Proton's listener base, as well as breakbeat
enthusiasts from all over the world. Futurized Radio
was, and still is, the only breakbeat show on Proton,
and focuses on the newest and most cutting-edge facets
of breakbeat. Futurized serves a listener base of over
1500 listeners per week (including the archive), and has
hosted mixes from the world's most groundbreaking DJs,
such as Dark Globe, Soul of Man, Atomic Hooligan, Future
Funk Squad, Elite Force, and more.
What's in store for the future? Angus plans to start up
a record label very soon (with what little free time he
has), which will focus on his own productions alongside
other up-and-coming breakbeat talent... and of course...
he'll be knocking 'em dead on the dancefloor with his
highly acclaimed combination funky & nu school breaks.
Bengston
Bengston is one of Switzerland's busiest breakbeat
movers. He travels the country and Europe alike to play
his own blend of chunky, bassheavy beat finery. It was
in 1996, when Bengston got his set of Turntables and
started buying vinyl. He played Hip Hop, Drum n Bass and
Big Beat before discovering release No.1 on Adam
Freeland's Marine Parade label in Summer 1998 on a four
week visit to Brighton. From then on he was hooked to
what people used to call nu skool breaks. He prefers to
simply call it breaks with the odd tech house tune
thrown in for good measure. Quality music for quality
people with a smile with no attitude.
Bengston has set up Ritmic Records, Switzerland's first
and only midtempo Breaks label while playing out in
places like Amsterdam, Berlin, Gotheborg, Nurnberg,
Frankfurt, Brussels or Grellingen (..). During the last
couple of years he has supported many top acts on their
gigs in Switzerland such as Aquasky, Hyper, Rennie
Pilgrem, Phantom Beats, Future Funk Squad and Drumattic
Twins. His Ritmic Records label has gone from strength
to strength with quality releases and support from the
likes of Jody Wisternoff, Annie Nightinhale, Orbital and
the Plump DJs to name but the most profilic ones. After
eight releases Ritmic is firmly established and already
heralded as one of the best breaks labels from the
European continent and with a string of more promising
releases, a new distributor and a top artist roaster the
label is set for even bigger things to come!
