Release Notes:
Tiny Crustacean Light Show is the third in a series of albums from Donovan's
Brain. Once again, it promises guitars, guitars and more guitars, delivering
across 14 new songs. Recording sessions began in January 1998, just as their
debut CD, Carelessly Restored Art, was released.
The first album, extracted from more than 40 songs recorded so far, sees the
Brain moving comfortably between precise rockers, Beatle melodics and extended
spacy excursions. There are six strong voices heard, and everyone in the band
contributed material to this release. Joining the Montana psychedelic crew this
time around was vintage rocker, Dave Walker, bringing his experience and
incredible voice to DonovanÆs Brain. It was Dave who replaced Jeff Lynne as
lead singer of Idle Race when he left to join the Move. DaveÆs best known for
his years with Savoy Brown, appearing on their best selling album, Street
Corner Talking. He has also recorded with Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath.
After a collaboration on the 1999 release, Eclipse and Debris, ex-Help Yourself
members, Richard Treece and Ken Whaley return to play a major role. They are
joined by their old friend Malcom Morley, contributing bass, guitar and piano
to the new Brain recordings. This marks the first time these three founding
members of Help Yourself have appeared together on record since 1974. Joakim
Erickson from the Nomads dropped in on the sessions to play drums on the title
track. Along with the 13 new originals, DonovanÆs Brain chose to cover ôOx
Bloodö an unreleased song written by Jim McPhearson. McPhearson was a member of
John Cipollina's post-Quicksilver Messenger Service bands Copperhead and Raven.
ôOx Bloodö comes from a Raven rehearsal tape Cipollina had given to main Brain,
Ron Sanchez.
