█ █ This is the best album of all time. If you buy it, you'll █ █
█ █ hate it, fear it, and will never understand it. It's simply █ █
█ █ too crazy for your average 'metal' fan. Sure, there's some █ █
█ █ synth in it, but don't sigh in relief yet. It's only used █ █
█ █ as an organ to further the horror movie feel they were █ █
█ █ going for. It's not a ridiculous replacement for a rythm █ █
█ █ guitar, and no one's wearing eye-liner. This album, with a █ █
█ █ scant few others, could have saved Death Metal from █ █
█ █ becoming the repetitive, childish, dancebeat crazed █ █
█ █ yukkfest it is today. It could have been weird, insane, and █ █
█ █ completely unpredictable. But instead, all we're left with █ █
█ █ is this and Deceased demos. █ █
█ █ Phantasm's sound is hard to pin down, or compare outside of █ █
█ █ Dr. Shrinker when it had Brandt in it. The closest █ █
█ █ comparison would be early Deceased crossed with Slauter █ █
█ █ Xstroyes. It's not as hectic as the first, or as disjointed █ █
█ █ or faux-technical as the second, and the songwriting's more █ █
█ █ reminiscent of Queen 2 than anything, with it's tendencies █ █
█ █ for almost complete changes to song-structure with little █ █
█ █ or no warning. With the exceptions of the more mundane █ █
█ █ Sewed Back To Life and Gut Suckers, this could be mistaken █ █
█ █ for either one long song, or a hundred short ones. Even the █ █
█ █ Yardbirds cover almost melds in perfectly, because it was █ █
█ █ pretty crazy to begin with. While it could be mistaken for █ █
█ █ a gimmick (Let's add a bunch of weird parts!) there's █ █
█ █ nothing less than deadly seriousness to this band. This █ █
█ █ wasn't an 'experimentation' to mask the lack of original █ █
█ █ ideas, this was a band too full of original ideas to create █ █
█ █ anything less weird. Nothing is forced or slapped in, and █ █
█ █ nothing ever intrudes on the fact that this is a death █ █
█ █ metal album. You won't hear any inappropriate jazz guitar █ █
█ █ or melodic sections, everything here is done in the context █ █
█ █ of death metal, with growling and screeching vocals, █ █
█ █ swirling guitars and furious drumwork. This was a band █ █
█ █ reinventing death metal, and being largely ignored, to █ █
█ █ everyone's loss. █ █
█ █ The highlights of the CD are the title track, which is █ █
█ █ easily the most scattered of the album. Moving from hectic █ █
█ █ death, to nothing but organ intonations with groaning, to a █ █
█ █ guitar part mimicking a banjo, the only way to be totally █ █
█ █ sure when this song ends is when the track number changes. █ █
█ █ Next is the Yardbirds cover, and as good as the original █ █
█ █ was, this kills it, completely transforming the song into a █ █
█ █ hulking, seething threat that sounds █ █
█ █ entirely in place. Maybe it's cheating a bit, since the █ █
█ █ original didn't have any guitar (Clapton thought the song █ █
█ █ was too pop, opting instead for the insipid Good Morning, █ █
█ █ Little Schoolgirl).The lowlights would be the unneeded █ █
█ █ Lycanthropy tracks. While Lycanthropy was an excellent demo █ █
█ █ itself, the sound hadn't fully developed yet and Palace Of █ █
█ █ Blood makes the CD end on too regular of a note. Keeper Of █ █
█ █ The Dead won't bother anyone too █ █
█ █ much though, as there's an absurd amount of dead time █ █
█ █ between the end of Palace and the start of Keeper, and █ █
█ █ owning Lycanthropy, I've never bothered to fast-forward █ █
█ █ through it after the first time. I can't say I miss that █ █
█ █ gimmick. █ █
█ █ Why am I putting forward complaints, and still giving this █ █
█ █ album a perfect score? Because even with the dumb intro and █ █
█ █ unneccesary bonus tracks serving as poor bookends, this has █ █
█ █ been my favorite album ever since the day I got it. It's █ █
█ █ the only album I own that's never left regular rotation. █ █
█ █ It's not an album that reaffirmed my love for metal, it's █ █
█ █ one of the cornerstones. This album is what metal should █ █
█ █ have become, but instead it chose to opt for 'who can █ █
█ █ blastbeat the fastest'. Phantasm died for your sins. █ █
