▓ The soul sound of the Average White Band was produced ▓
▓ by the above average Scottish musicians Allan Gorrie ▓
▓ (bass/vocals), Hamish Stuart (guitar, vocals), Owen ▓
▓ "Onnie" McIntyre (guitar), Malcolm "Mollie" Duncan ▓
▓ (saxophone), Roger Ball (saxophone/keyboards) and ▓
▓ Robbie McIntosh ( drums). ▓
▓ ▓
▓ In 1973 they released their debut album, "Show Your ▓
▓ Hand" without much notice. The following year they ▓
▓ released "AWB", also known as the "White Album" which ▓
▓ went to number 1 on the U.S. charts in 1975. It ▓
▓ included a cover of the Isley Brothers "Work To Do", ▓
▓ and the number 1 hit "Pick Up The Pieces". ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Just as they were achieving international success, it ▓
▓ was reported that Robbie McIntosh had tragically died ▓
▓ from an overdose of heroin. He was replaced by Steve ▓
▓ Ferrone for the "Cut The Cake" album, which also ▓
▓ reached the top-10 on the popularity of it's title ▓
▓ track. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ In 1976 " Soul Searching" went to number 9 on the ▓
▓ U.S. album charts, and in '77 a collaboration with ▓
▓ singer Ben E. King produced the promising album ▓
▓ "Benny And Us". ▓
▓ ▓
▓ During the eighties the Average White Band released ▓
▓ Shine (1980), Volume VIII (1980), Cupid's In Fashion ▓
▓ (1982), and Sleepless Nights (1985), before splitting ▓
▓ up to pursue individual careers. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Ferrone worked with Duran Duran. Hamish Stuart did ▓
▓ session work for Aretha Franklin, and Chaka Khan, ▓
▓ then spent six years with the Paul McCartney Band ▓
▓ starting with the Flowers In The Dirt album. He was ▓
▓ actually unavailable when the Average White Band ▓
▓ re-formed in 1989 for the "Aftershock" album. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ For the Aftershock album, original members Gorrie, ▓
▓ Ball and McIntyre were joined by Alex Ligertwood, ▓
▓ former Santana vocalist, and Eliot Lewis. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ In 1997, the average white band released "Soul ▓
▓ Tattoo" and added drummer Pete Abbott. Ball retired ▓
▓ from touring and was replaced by Fred Vigdor, and the ▓
▓ following year Abbott was replaced by Fred "Catfish" ▓
▓ Alias. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ In 1999 they released "Face To Face" a live recording ▓
▓ taken from their 1997 performances at the Fillmore in ▓
▓ San Francisco. The album features a mix of both old ▓
▓ and new material including: Soul Mine, Every Beat Of ▓
▓ My Heart, Oh, Maceo and Back To Basics, Work To Do, ▓
▓ Got The Love, and Pick Up The Pieces. ▓

▓ Most recently The Average White Band has released the ▓
▓ DVD, "Tonight" which was recorded during a 2000 show ▓
▓ at the house of blues in L.A., and includes ▓
▓ interviews and backstage footage. They also released ▓
▓ their first studio album in six years with their 2003 ▓
▓ album, "Living In Colour". ▓
