Listening to the new record from Tennessee-based quartet Commerce, the first
thing that popped into my mind was, ôif these guys were from Brooklyn, weÆd
be tired of hearing about them by now.ö
Drop the virtual needle on the bandÆs full-length debut and youÆll
immediately find yourself amazed at how easy it all goes down. But that
doesnÆt mean The Things I Say Vs. The Things I Mean is all bunnies and ice
cream under summer skies. Sure, viewed from a distance, The Things I Say Vs.
The Things I Mean is the sound of exceptionally well-constructed pop in the
vein of Weezer-lite, but get behind the shiny facade and youÆll be treated to
a level of musical mea culpa weÆve come to expect from acts like Eels or
Mountain Goats. Case in point, the recordÆs impossibly fragile lead single,
Where We Are, which benefits from a video that is absolutely simpatico.
Rarely has a single song resonated with such vulnerability, heartbreak and,
ultimately, hope.
Commerce is definitely a band to keep your eye on. The Things I Say Vs. The
