. . Among the cognoscenti of the second wave of ambient music, . .
. the one that emerged out of the chill rooms of the rave .
. and gradually morphed into a new, quicksilver form of .
      . experimental electronic music, the so-called "em:t .
. series", eighteen albums isssued in gorgeous digipaks .
. (courtesy of The Designer's Republic), stands as an .
. Alexandrian library of genre landmarks. One whose volumes .
. became elusive when the label went bankrupt after only .
      . five years. .
      . .
. And among those albums, the two by Woob (released in 1994 .
. and 1995, repectively) are universally recognized as the .
. best, the most engrossing, the most-meticulously composed, .
. the standard-bearers of the whole series. .
      . .
. Paul Frankland also produced two albums during roughly the .
. same time under the monicker Journeyman together with .
. Colin Waterton, the first of which, "Mama6", was also .
. deservedly praised to the skies. The major difference .
. between the two projects, perhaps, is that due to the .
. slightly beatier nature of Journeyman, you had the sense .
. of being taken somewhere, whereas with Woob, you were .
. already there. And wherever "there" was, no one else but .
. he could take you. .
      . .
. Since then, however, he has been very, very quiet. .
      . .
. And suddenly Internet rumblings about a new Woob album are .
. made manifest in the form of an album titled "Repurpose". .
      . .
. The title is frank and honest, since Frankland has chosen .
. to resume trading as Woob (or "Woob 2.1" as suggested in .
. the accompanying booklet) by heavily borrowing from its .
. back catalogue. Specifically, the opening, title track .
      . samples a contribution to a compilation from the year 2000 .
. (though only about twenty seconds of it, as the track .
. begins); "Nylon" was crafted by combining the second half .
. of "Later", the final track on the second Woob album, with .
. new material; "Giant Stroke (Extended)" has been .
. seamlessly assembled from various live mixes of the .
. eponymous track which originally appeared on em:t .
. compilation "1197" and the following track includes a .
. snatch from another, "5595". The penultimate track .
. "Departure" folds ingredients from two tracks off Woob's .
. second solo album into a new mixture, while the .
      . seventeen-minute closer is all brand-new. .
      . .
. Getting reacquainted with these familiar sounds is a .
. delight - the trumpet, the guitar and the percussion of .
. "Nylon"; the gongs and bells and breathy vocals and hoarse .
. digeridoo of "Giant Stroke"; the impossibly-dark strokes .
. of the cello which open "Stranger Air"; and the elastic .
. bass of Riad Abji on "Departure", just a few of many .
. signal sounds which caused these albums to stick .
. permanently in the mind fifteen years ago. .
      . .
. One of many characteristics which made Woob stand out in .
. bold relief among his talented peers was his artfulness .
. working at the intersection of electronics and "exotic" .
. sounds from the Subcontinent and Middle and Far East. .
. Rather than waving them flamboyantly as flags of phoney .
. multiculturalism, he makes each seem an organic outgrowth .
. of the other. Just a wisp of Japanese ehru, for example, .
. and your perspective is shifted, not jolted, in a new .
      . direction. .
      . .
. The new track, and the dexterity with which he manipulates .
. and recontextualizes the elements from older recordings, .
. proves that he certainly hasn't lost that touch, maybe .
      . even refined it. .
      . .
. A comeback with a difference for those who were present at .
. the time, and a revelation in waiting for newcomers. .
