Beginning in the winter of 2004, lead singer Jim Gilligan of what has now
become Canamara, started his first band consisting of a few local musicians.
After recording a short EP and performing at The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ the
band later broke up. Jim continued to pursue the music writing songs in his
basement while working on forming another band. A few years later another
project followed but was short lived due to some musical differences. These
early "set-backs" were later quoted by Jim as being, "the exact
disappointments that were needed to bring the music to life."
For about a year and a half following the 2 previous failed projects, Jim
started to play the New York and New Jersey open mic circuit. Equipped with
an acoustic guitar and some original songs he started playing in different
bars and coffee houses. After performances he began to get approached by bar
owners and managers asking if he had a band and was being offered bookings.
People at the bar also started showing interest in buying a cd of the songs
although at the time nothing had been recorded yet. With a stack of business
cards and a bunch of napkins with club owner's contact information motivation
grw to yet again attempt to form a band.
Christmas of 2008 the first musician to join canamara was a talented
guitarist from Elizabeth, NJ who was introduced to Jim through a mutual
friend. Jesse James Robinson Jr. is a uniquely motivated and creative
musician who had also been in and out of a few failed musical projects in the
past. After hearing a demo recording of a song that Jim had wrote he was
instantly on board and has been ever since. For a year following this
encounter, Canamara had literally gone through over 20 different members.
In March of 2009, with an at the time steady lineup, Canamara entered a local
Battle of the Bands coming in 1st place. A few weeks later following the show
3 members ended up leaving for different reasons. These 3 member's exodus
from the band opened up another door for Canamara to really take a quantun
leap forward after recruiting 3 new members. This shift in members would
later play a great role in defining Canamara's sound.
Responding to an ad for guitarist, Victor Cacon, a superbly talented lead
guitarist and soloist from Elizabeth, NJ came in for an audition and was
immediately swept away by the music and has become a pivotal member of the
band. In need of a strong percussionist, Jason Brown a percussionist from
Linden. NJ responded to an ad and also quickly found a home with Canamara.
The final piece needed to complete the puzzle was a bass player. Greg
Metchnik, a talented musician from Cranford, NJ to answered an ad and after
hearing a demo version of "All I Need" was immediately hooked. Greg was at
the time involved with another local original band, but decided to leave that
band in order to secure a spot with canamara. He is quoted as saying that,
"he believes in the overall sound and vision of the band."
The dedication that Canamara has is closely reminiscent of bands in the past
that have made impacts in the music world. This band has a certain ethereal
effect that seems to pull on the heart strings of the listener. The music and
the lyrics have a sincerity in their truth and emotion and are unpretentious
with a subtle beauty that comes out of the melodies. It seems to reach a
deeper, more vulnerable part of the soul.
In 2011, the band self-released their eponymous debut EP.
