All the songs presented on this third full-length sound unmistakably like
Golden Dogs tunes, but they're substantially more stable (even with singer
Dave Azzolini's sometimes-chaotic yelps). There's nothing ready to fly apart
at the seams, like Big Eye Little Eye's "Dynamo" was, and there's nothing
that leaps into a completely different genre, like several of the songs on
Everything In 3 Parts did.
Other noticeable differences on this record include a persistent and funky
groove, and the upped participation of band member Jessica Grassia, who takes
lead vocals on about half the album's tracks. More than any of their releases
to date, this aptly represents a Golden Dogs live performance.
Coat Of Arms is the sort of effort you'd label as " surprisingly mature" had
it come from a younger, less experienced band. In The Golden Dogs' case,
perhaps they traded in a bit (but only a bit) of their carefree attitude for
a shot at something that'll be taken more seriously than the creepy,
glowing-eyed pooch on the album's cover would suggest.
Top track: "Cheap Umbrellas," with its New Pornographers-ish ups and downs,
and Grassia belting out the chorus like she's the second coming of
"Birdsong"-era Azzolini.
