The BlackÆs second album, Sun In The Day Moon At Night, breathes cool. It
exudes it. Blasts it like a runaway air conditioner. Their debut û 2005Æs
Tanglewood û was a solid romping album that showed glimpses of this seminal
coolness, but never came even close to what this long awaited followup
accomplishes. Ten songs that sound like Bob Dylan and Jimmy Reed via Carl
Perkins and The Stones. A band photo showing four unassuming guys, slouching
like the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in black suits. The vintage Ampeg. ItÆs
all there; Cool.
But it wouldnÆt be cool if this record didnÆt deliver musically. Aesthetics
and sonics donÆt add up to much if the songs donÆt cut it, but on the new
record, the Black delivers. On songs like ôFreeway (Exciled)ö and ôLove DonÆt
Need A Reasonö, the Black scorch like a backroads honky tonk garage band.
David Longoria and Alan Schaefer trade classic guitar lines, biting back
forth, and often exploding perfectly. The BlackÆs music is distinctly hip,
but not hipster. On these faster songs, the band swings through rock and
rollÆs pearly gates, transporting the long gone sounds of Buddy Holly and
lesser known garaged nuggets through the radio. Unpretentious, unadulterated,
and unfiltered, itÆs a sound many have done before, but few have done û at
least recently û this well.
But where the band really soars and finds its calling are the slower country
rock shuffles ù ôNow I Am Hereö, ôThrowing Awayö, and ôIt Only Makes You
Blueö are long lost calls from DylanÆs past. Longoria sounds like he was
raised on John Wesley Harding and Planet Waves, buried by The Basement Tapes
and woken by that guy who yelled ôJudasö in 1966. Lines like ôThe stories she
tells him/ are ones she donÆt tell meö and ôI miss you is just another notion
that IÆm throwing awayö cut like an Idiot Wind turned hurricane. Longoria and
friends hit it dead; the searing harmonica and smooth pedal steel provide the
perfect touches to their American rock and roll.
If a band needs a formula ù and the Black are anything but formulaic û
thereÆs absolutely nothing wrong with following the trinity of one named
legends: Dylan, Elvis, and Cash. The BlackÆs songs are strewn with their
ghosts and û were it another era û they would be welcomed to call Sun Studios
home. Throughout Sun In The Day Moon At Night, the Black somehow come across
as originals. Cool, authentic originals with a sound from decades past for
the current and future.
