░▓██▒░ guitar & cello is an odd combination for a band, you're ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ right! If you think it couldn't possibly work, you're ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ wrong!! Moody and compelling, and definitely not for ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ everyone. Worth it just for the track "Mirage", which lives ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ up to its title sonically. The track "Laser" does the same ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ also... a blistering solo electric guitar kills any ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ semblance of peace and silence, and after it's over, sets up ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ the hot-summer-day-let-me-lay-and-listen mood for the rest ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ of the CD. As I said, this CD isn't for everyone, but if you ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ like your music a little different, it'll be right up your ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ alley! One of my favorite Rypdal LPs, along with "Chaser", ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ "Singles Collection", and "To Be Continued". All are well ░▓██▒░

░▓██▒░ Terje Rypdal has long had an unusual style, mixing together ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ elements more commonly found in new age and rock than in ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ jazz; yet he is also an adventurous improviser. Associated ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ with the ECM label since the early '70s, Rypdal's playing is ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ definitely an acquired taste, using space and dense sounds ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ in an unusual manner. Classically trained as a pianist, ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ Rypdal was largely self-taught on guitar and originally most ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ influenced by Jimi Hendrix. He attended Oslo University, ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ where he was taught the Lydian chromatic concept of tonal ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ organization by its author, George Russell. Rypdal played ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ with Russell for a time and started an association with Jan ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ Garbarek in the late '60s. He formed the group Odyssey in ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ 1972, and has led various small groups since the mid-'70s. ░▓██▒░

░▓██▒░ Eclectic composer/cellist David Darling incorporates jazz, ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ classical, country, pop, and new age music into his playing ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ and compositions. ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ Starting as a child, Darling displayed facility with many ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ different instruments and styles of music; he began with ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ piano at age four, moved ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ to cello six years later, and played string bass in his ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ high school band (while also serving as bandleader). After ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ finishing his studies in classical cello at Indiana State ░▓██▒░
░▓██▒░ College in 1965, Darling stayed on as an instructor for four ░▓██▒░
