jonatan backelie, aka tantan and ernesto, hails from the nu school
jazz and broken beat scene that is bursting out of sweden at the
moment.
here he uses broken beats as the start into an excursion that's as
much experimental techno as it is jazz based.
the beats literally trip over themselves as the track begins,
before being violently submerged by the onslaught of the bass.
from here the track builds gradually and subtly, setting out an
intention, rather than reaching a conclusion. it's perhaps a lazy
finish for something that clearly had complex intentions at its
inception.
on the flip cuica, aka atlas' pete herbert and big bang's simone
serritella, pick the beats up for a more structured, dancefloor
approach. the duo layer in strings, tighten up the bass into a
series of jazz-funk runs and lead the track back into nu-jazz
territory.
