French Rock music reappeared as a blast in the 90Æs
under a funny shape incorrectly qualified of
ônouvelle chanson franτaiseö (New French music)
Born in 1966 on libertarian foundations sealed by
the alternative punk music and independent radio
stations in the 80Æs, Les Hurlements dÆLΘo (LeoÆs
screams) put down their amps on random venues,
chained concerts like others do with drinks and
corrected as they could the so-called ôchanson
franτaiseö with a selection of instruments enabling
them to a wider freedom as they go along meetings.
From their older brothersÆ agitated liveliness,
they kept a tough energy looking like a face carved
through a lifetime of alcohol and excess,
persisting and unleashed by sawed crushes.
Bringing up the Hurlements dÆLΘo from back then is
remembering all those concerts in mythical loud
smoky bars, in overcrowded venues scattering a
happy mess on BordeauxÆs slippery pavements, where
the urge to play fights over the hemorrhage of
smoky gatherings.
In four years, the Hurlements dÆLΘo acquired the
art of playing on stage, and released their first
album. From the difficult exercise of mastering the
words, they increased their dexterity, using their
vocabulary as much on rock melodies than on more
fragile songs.
On their photo album from the years in Bordeaux
(1999: Le CafΘ des Jours Heureux has now become a
classic; 2000: La Belle Affaire) they multiply
intra-conjugal affairs and bring to rock music many
liberated and blood siblings. Un air, deux
famillesæs team, led by concerts and great
compositions (ôLiveö recorded in 2001) in the
company of the Diaspora Orgres de Barback, drove in
tractor-trailers and produced themselves under a
arbor of canvas. The Latcho Drom marquee jabbed its
poles everywhere in France and Europe and shared
their stage with the local native bands.
Without rest, eager for hectic adventures, Les
Hurlements dÆLΘo jumped borders without warnings
towards new playgrounds called Australia, Japan,
Africa, or again the release of their album ôOuest
Terneö in 2003 which marked their peak. A new tour
as well as a six-titles-album called Hardcore
Trobadors came out from their meeting with the
German brass-band 17 Hippies, and both bands shared
stages for almost 3 months (as well as the one in
the La RochelleÆs Francofoliesà.)
2005, a live album brought together their best
songs. In 2006, Le Temps suspendu, a shameless and
serious album, invites all friends theyÆve met on
roads, listens to everyoneÆs personality and comes
to term with the time of maturity.
Far from the consumerism strangleholds, their
adventures represent as many autonomous Republics
as they represent fields invigorated by obstinacy.
The improbable meeting with the Italian band
LÆEnfance rougeÆs wild rock drove them to new
horizons: the test was daring, bands were
transformed for the time of their tour into WildÆs
Republic to the anarchical constitution.
The context being favorable, the adventure crumbled
onto myriads of French scene solid Stakhanovisms
satellite projects: KebousÆ solo project, Les
Touffes KrΘtiennes with their constantly variable
morphologyà
Those insolently punk troubadoursÆ expected return
brings in its luggage new surprising companions,
taking over the ones who left to other roads.
