   Pierre-Laurent Aimard - piano (#4,6,8,10,12,13,15), clapping (#2)
Aka Pygmies (#1,3,5,7,9,11,14,16) / Shima Arom, musical director

The vocal music of the Aka Pygmies, piano pieces by Gy÷rgi Ligeti, and
early percussion compositions by Steve Reich might seem like a rather
whimsical - not to say willfully bizarre - combination of elements.
But this program, put together by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and
based on a pair of concerts he organized in 1999 and 2000, has a
unifying theme that becomes obvious once you begin listening to the
album: that theme is polyrhythm and polyphony. The pygmy chants
showcased here are both complexly polyrhythmic and unusually
harmonically dense. The two Reich pieces, "Clapping Music" and "Music
for Pieces of Wood" (which is performed on an overdubbed piano rather
than on the tuned claves for which the piece was written) are both
similarly layered and complex, and the Ligeti piano works, while
often spikier and more "difficult," show the composer's debt to the
music of both sub-Saharan Africa and Reich. The result is a
fascinating program of music both old and "new" that demonstrates
surprising parallels between the two. - Rick Anderson
