██▓▓ Another ACID project playing the showcase is ██▓▓
██▓▓ Symplx, the brainchild of Jason Justin, who ██▓▓
██▓▓ hails from Barrie. Unlike the more ██▓▓
██▓▓ dance-friendly grooves of P.J., Justin ██▓▓
██▓▓ adheres to the less-is-more philosophy and ██▓▓
██▓▓ says he was initially drawn to the synthetic ██▓▓
██▓▓ sphere of music by his love of sonics and ██▓▓
██▓▓ off-beat sounds. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ The roots of Symplx can be traced to 1987 ██▓▓
██▓▓ when Justin, who was DJ-ing at the time, ██▓▓
██▓▓ discovered the smiley-faced Acid House ██▓▓
██▓▓ revolution, which, he says, compelled him to ██▓▓
██▓▓ start collecting keyboards, samplers and ██▓▓
██▓▓ other tools of the trade and start making ██▓▓
██▓▓ his own music. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ Though Justin continues to DJ, the bulk of ██▓▓
██▓▓ his time has been spent with Ollie Barkovic ██▓▓
██▓▓ at his Steel City Records in Hamilton, where ██▓▓
██▓▓ he's produced tracks for other artists as ██▓▓
██▓▓ well as releasing a couple of EPs of his ██▓▓
██▓▓ own. Says Justin about Hamilton's history of ██▓▓
██▓▓ electronic music and underground DJ madness, ██▓▓
██▓▓ "I think it's the people that make the ██▓▓
██▓▓ difference. Ollie's been throwing parties ██▓▓
██▓▓ for years and people are just really into ██▓▓
██▓▓ the music there. Torontonians don't seem to ██▓▓
██▓▓ be all that open to what goes on in other ██▓▓
██▓▓ places. It's not that important where you ██▓▓
██▓▓ live. A lot of it comes down to emotion." ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ As for his 30-minute set at the showcase, ██▓▓
██▓▓ Justin plans on a basic set-up with the ██▓▓
██▓▓ emphasis on building up some mind-bending ██▓▓
██▓▓ grooves, rather than showing off all his ██▓▓
██▓▓ equipment. "Some of the best records that I ██▓▓
██▓▓ have were made with two pieces of gear," he ██▓▓
██▓▓ stresses. "It's not always about what you ██▓▓
██▓▓ have but what you do with it. I'd show up ██▓▓
██▓▓ with just a laptop if I could get away with ██▓▓
██▓▓ it." ██▓▓
