Recorded live in Christchurch, mixed in Wellington and mastered in LA, æSnag
BagÆ is the second album from P-Bass Expressway. Named after the Fender
Precision Bass - the first electric bass guitar marketed in 1951 - the
five-piece funk factory have bought in friends with alto sax, trombone, synths
and smooth vocal styles to spice up their recipe of guitar, percussion,
keyboards, trumpet and the foresaid P-bass. Largely instrumental, the 12 songs
are tight, bright and well-produced - the bass in particular comes through rich
and sassy, and listeners will appreciate the attention given to the percussion.
And like good poets the Expressway are thoughtful with their silences, leaving
pauses in the busy funk that add immeasurably to the songs. At an average of
five-minutes long, the songs are not for the impatient and it will be
interesting to see if radio play-list some of the lengthier singles - as they
should.
