Somewhat bafflingly, the Brownswood Recordings label bills Elan Mehler's The After
Suite as the Brooklyn pianist's "eponymous" album, despite it clearly being called
The After Suite. Not to worry, the record itself isn't nearly so confused. This set
of elegant jazzy constructions takes in buoyant swingtime jaunts like 'The 54th Leap'
and the often very flashy 'Notom Road' whilst ably summoning up ballads like 'The New
Breed' and the haunting 'Post Script' led by Jeremy Viner's deeply expressive sax -
you can hear his instrument crackling with breath on every quiet exhalation. It's on
these misty-eyed slower numbers that Mehler's compositional abilities truly shine,
and there's even a killer cover on here: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings' 'I Dream A
Highway' which here gets the same sort of treatment it might have from Susanna & The
Magical Orchestra.
