Phew, now that the opening spiel is out
of the way we can get to the business at
hand. This fourth instalment in the
Cotton Goods lending library series
comes to us from longtime UK producer
David Newlyn, last seen included as part
of an impressive triple CD set on the
Mobeer label. Over the last couple of
years the sort of sound Newlyn makes has
been omnipresent through about 5 dozen
"homespun" British imprints, typified by
handmade packaging, limited editions and
a love of modern classical, or often
faux modern classical techniques
designed for home listening. Anyway, as
you'd expect from Cotton Goods, they
buck the trend by producing handmade
packages that actually look like they
took half a lifetime to make, and
release music from the first tier of
modern classical and ambient music. Over
the course of 40 minutes Newlyn displays
a love of field recording, string
layering and micro construction that is
just beautiful to listen to, bringing to
mind the likes of Richard Skelton, Peter
Broderick and Marsen Jules at different
points through the course of 10 tracks.
It's delicate, moving music perfectly
suited to the label's aesthetic, and
bound to offer you much comfort through
these last days of winter. If you want
