▓ Angeles by Memphis's Stax Records, the 1972 Wattstax ▓
▓ festival continues to reverberate as one of the most ▓
▓ earthshaking concerts in the annals of African ▓
▓ American music; thanks to the reissue of the ▓
▓ brilliant documentary film "Wattstax: The Living ▓
▓ Word" and now this 3-CD set of nusic performed at and ▓
▓ around the festival, nearly a third of it never ▓
▓ previously vailable. Seven years earlier, a sizeable ▓
▓ section of L.A.'s Watts district had burned to the ▓
▓ ground in angry, urban rebellion, but now it was ▓
▓ 'nation time' as Rev. Jesse Jackson proclaimed in his ▓
▓ opening remarks that August 20th, 1972 afternoon, ▓
▓ with Wattstax serving as a momumental gesture of ▓
▓ healing. Some 112,000 people assembled peacefully at ▓
▓ the Los Angeles Coliseum for 7 hours of music by ▓
▓ nearly very artist signed to Stax at the time. Label ▓
▓ luminaries such as Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, ▓
▓ the Bar-Kays, Carla Thomas and Rufus Thomas offered ▓
▓ stunning performances, with lesser known figures like ▓
▓ Little Sonny, Lee Sain and the Temprees also nicely ▓
▓ represented. And adding to the spiritual dimension of ▓
▓ Wattstax was its wealth of great gospel music, ▓
