█ I had absolutely no expectation to enjoy Gorjus: █
█ Fighting Bockman's Euphio, the second CD from █
█ Bockman's Euphio (all of my prejudices were based on █
█ inane observations, of course). First of all, their █
█ name screams prog rock. Luckily for everyone, that's █
█ not the case, and although I didn't identify it as █
█ such (I'm kind of disappointed in myself for missing █
█ it), the name is a reference to a Kurt Vonnegut short █
█ story. Second, only three songs are under six minutes █
█ long, and those aren't under five. I normally think, █
█ with only a few exceptions like Bob Dylan, that a █
█ song longer than four minutes is overkill. But, █
█ Bockman's Euphio manages to keep my attention through █
█ songs that are seven and eight minutes long. The █
█ group exhibits a lot of what is right in the world of █
█ independent music, a group that is definitely doing █
█ its own thing. █

█ The album starts off with "Patience," a track that █
█ would probably be at home on a Modest Mouse album. █
█ The lead singer on that song (they are all credited █
█ with vocals, so it's hard to know who is who) even █
█ has a voice similar to Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. █
█ This was a good choice for an opener, as it is one of █
█ the better songs on the album. The third track, █
█ "Blues Off," is what it might have sounded like if █
█ Beck and the Flaming Lips had done studio work █
█ together. There is a little of the Lips' musical █
█ weirdness mixed with a little of Beck's unique █
█ lyricism. But, it seems like there's also a little █
█ bit of jam band music thrown in. While the jam band █
█ aspect of the Bockman's Euphio is not, by any means, █
█ the most visible part of their musical background, █
█ there are strains of it running through several of █
█ the albumÆs tracks. Their bio claims that the group █
█ has had an interest in experimental music that they █
█ have begun to leave behind. I don't hear that as much █
█ as I do what is generally considered improvisation █
█ music. █

█ In the Vonnegut story, "The Euphio Question," an █
█ invention by Dr. Bockman (the Euphoria), transmitted █
█ sounds that brought "incomparable, continuous █
█ happiness." The band claims that they strive to do █
█ the same thing. On Gorjus, they come close. █
