     On the recent Gong with Wind Suite, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz
     and drummer Matt Wilson have recorded a beautiful set of
     improvised duets. Konitz has recorded other duets, most notably
     with a variety of musicians on The Lee Konitz Duets, which was
     recorded for Milestone in 1967.

     Most sax/drum duets are rather aggressive sounding (see an
     earlier discussion of the topic), but this one is calmer and
     more thoughtful than most. Wilson worked with Konitz in the
     early 1990s and their familiarity shows in their ease in
     playing. All the tunes here are spontaneous improvisations.
     Often Konitz will take a snippet of melody as a starting point,
     which he then spins into long, flowing lines of understated
     melodic improvisation. The younger Wilson (38) often defers to
     Konitz (72) hereùKonitz often start the pieces and then Wilson
     responds with a variety of percussionùsometimes using mallets
     or sometimes some Billy Higgins-influenced stick work (on "Song
     With the Wind") or even doing some hand drumming (on "Snare
     Rattle").

     The recording might have been more exciting had Wilson engaged
     Konitz more, but it's still nice to hear Konitz in such an
     unfettered setting.
