MedalsÆ brand of 80's/90Æs inspired synth pop is part of a recent resurgence
in the genre. Their single, ôTurn to Gold,ö is an interesting, but uneven
track. Will PopadicÆs lilting vocals are strong and interestingly phrased in
a ôdramatic readingö style. The music is carried by the half buried guitar
theme, unfortunately, thatÆs eclipsed by the drum machine and synths. Medals
runs through what seems like unrelated genres and styles over the course of
the three minutes of this song. ItÆs almost as if they glued different songs
together to create this unique track.
Medals is comprised of former Jaguar Club members Popadic (on vocals &
guitar) and Yoi Fujita (on bass, guitars and electronics). Their debut album,
Dancing In Ceremony, was just released on March 29. The project started out
as the next Jaguar Club record, but when the band called it quits in 2010.
The only problem with this was that Will and Yoi had several half finished
songs û songs that they liked. The pair tossed together analog synthesizers,
acoustic guitars, drum machines, harmonicas, and FujitaÆs killer bass hooks
with WillÆs distinctive voice. Little known fact: the album was recorded with
mostly first takes û rare in the music biz.
Medals just made their live debut this past January, with longtime friend
Nadia Brittingham, joining them on stage as the keyboardist. A few upcoming
tour dates are below, but a more extensive touring is planned for the spring
and summer months.
