The rapidly expanding Ghost Box Study
Series yields this curious 7ö from new
project Hintermass. A collaboration
between Jon Brooks (The Advisory Circle)
and Tim Felton of Seeland, itÆs a
guileless and ultimately very charming
excursion into hauntological pop, with
proper vocals and everything! An obvious
comparison is to the space age bachelor
pad gear of early Broadcast, Pram and
Stereolab, though FeltonÆs vocal
register and æAre You WatchingÆÆs
unashamedly upbeat, sub-dappled vibe
also conjure Gruff Rhys / SFA at their
most trippy and least annoying. The
production and arrangement is plump and
high-fidelity, but crucially packs that
all-important musty whiff of library
music and made-for-TV session psych, and
is laden with the kind of woozy Brooks
synthesizer melodies that have made his
past Ghost Box and CafΘ Kaput releases
so irresistible. æSo It Should BeÆ is
similarly dreamy but a little more
pared-down, FeltonÆs croon lamenting
something loved and lost across a Vernon
Elliott-esque frieze of bucolic woodwind
and synthetic shimmer.
