When my friends and colleagues first took a glance at my
best albums of 2002 list, most were confused and bewildered
when they witnessed The Fire ShowÆs Saint The Fire Show
holding top spot. Many were dumbfounded that they had never
heard of this band and their highly underrated musical
approach and productivity. The Fire Show was shamefully
deprived of any stardom due to the lack of media attention
they conjured, but what remains the same to this day is how
beautifully experimental, polished, and intelligent Saint
The Fire Show was with their electro-minimalism and
avant-garde indie texture. And much to my dismay, I was
astounded by the quick dismissal of the band and their lack
of concern about the talent and achievement that they had
bestowed upon us in their short but plentiful career.
Michael Lenzi is the heart behind Resplendent and an alumnus
of the famous Chicago manifestation The Fire Show. And like
his previous musical output, ResplendentÆs In A Wilderness
is a gorgeous journey through electronic concoctions and
experimental lo-fi. What differentiates Resplendent from The
Fire Show is the obvious lack of musical angst. Their
musical approach is vocally driven, not powered by guitar
aggressiveness, layering strong, admirable and emotional
lyrics accompanied with soft and subtle undertones. The
addition of horns and drum loops has created a stunning and
sophisticated record full of surprisingly thoughtful music.
While most of the record dabbles in electronic
accompaniment, the songs resonate a harmonious blend of
musical instrumentation that envelops you completely. Songs
like ôPitch & Yawö and the instrumental ôLong Distance
Toastö are truly beautiful in their grandeur and simplicity.
ôSemi Hellbent Tipö is an amusing twist into electro-hip-hop
as Lenzi layers his vocals and creates an illusion of
spatial cleverness. Sometimes, less is best and Michael
Fenzi has proven that again with Resplendent.
Will Resplendent top my 2003 list? Perhaps not, but what
remains to be said is that this record is a truly
appropriate record for the offspring of one of indie musicÆs
most talented bands The Fire Show. Michael Lenzi introduces
us to another side of his talent, and I hope and pray that
ResplendentÆs In A Wilderness is a sign of the future to
