What is Threepiece? We are first and foremost an
improvisational rock and roll band. We try to combine the
freedom and adventure of jazz with some of our favorite aspects
of rockÆs rich and lively history. We create an engaging musical
environment that can be both relaxing and energizing. A typical
Threepiece show involves screaming rock, funky grooves, melodic
country, colorful reggae, traditional jazz, a bit of chaotic
tension and many improvisational forays into the unknown.
We began our current incarnation in the summer of 2001, but have
been inseperable musical friends since 1996. Threepiece was
conceived in a red Escort en route to a Medeski, Martin, and
Wood show. Sean Rooney (bass) and Peter McArthur were listining
to a live version of Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix when the
realization hit that a threepiece band adventure could easily be
possible. With that in mind we started learning ZZ Top and Jimi
Hendrix songs with drummer Josh Walters. We learned other tunes
and wrote some of our own.
We've spent most of our time working on listening skills in an
effort to tighten up the band sound. Most of our music requires
the majority of the content to be filled with improvisations.
This is much more difficult for us than simply performing a set
of written and completely predetermined changes. Our tunes are
structures through which we play.
