A founding force in Manchester's acid house scene, 808 State
contributed to the burgeoning popularity of club electronica with
the strength of its own releases, as well as its production work for
groups like the Inspiral Carpets.
Formed in Manchester in 1988 by record store owner Martin Price,
along with local scenesters Graham Massey and Gerald Simpson, 808
State released its debut EP Newbuild on Price's independent label
Creed.
Simpson left to concentrate on a solo project and was replaced by
DJs Andrew Barker and Darren Partington (aka the Spinmasters) for
1989's Quadrastate EP, producing the club hit "Pacific." The group
signed with ZTT, making a foray into rave culture and later trying
their hand at hip-hop. 808 State returned to its techno-pop roots
with the 1991 album Ex: el (Tommy Boy), with contributions from
Bjork and New Order's Bernard Sumner.
Price left 808 State in 1992 to form the label Sun Text and
concentrate on production, while the rest of the group released the
1993 album Gorgeous as well as 1996's more experimental effort, Don
Solaris (ZTT). The trio also lent its remixing skills to artists
like Soundgarden and David Bowie.
