The British dance band Shriekback formed in 1980 around former XTC
keyboardistBarry Andrews, who -- together with ex-Gang of Four
bassist Dave Allen, vocalist Carl Marsh, and a drum machine --
released a string of successful hard-edged industrial/dance/rock
albums during the first half of the 1980s. By the middle of the
decade Allen and Marsh had left the band, leaving Andrews, drummer
Martyn Barker, and a rotating cast of musicians to release several
more records before disbanding in 1989. (Allen went on to become a
noted producer, working with the Cure and Depeche Mode, while Marsh
remains a popular session musician.)
