▄▀░████▓░▀║ and distant sound effects you'd associate with ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ the inky blackness of a galactic graveyard. Even ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ sat in my well-lit room with a tin of Pringles, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ happily typing away, this noise plunges my mind ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ into utter blackness, despite what my eyes see. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ The band is grouped in with Paysage d'Hiver in ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ terms of sound. In terms of anchoring it to an ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ influence, Darkspace is compared to Burzum in ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ terms of composition. But comparisons to Varg's ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ work become far away with the second Darkspace ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ album, where all the more 'metal' moments of the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ previous disc are subsumed in oceans of ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ colourless ambience. Because when the great fuzzy ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ guitar riffs yawn wide after minutes of this ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ blackness, the keys humming behind, I see great ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ rifts of space, unfathomable distances with ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ absolutely no hint of relatable life. Burzum ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ bespeaks forests, abandonment, death, but at ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ least a suggestion of life whether hostile or ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ departed. This is where no life has existed for ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ millennia, where no life can ever exist again. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ This is watching the eerily preserved ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ paraphernalia of mankind drift listlessly through ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ the darkness an aeon after the end of the fucking ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ universe. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ I like Sunn O))) a fair bit. With this album, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Darkspace became the band that gets closest to ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ being my Sunn O))) of black metal. The opening ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ track 'Dark 2.8' is utterly repetitive, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ blastbeats from programmed drums, blaring ambient ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ synths and fiercely hissing guitars, along with ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ the thin, miles away vocals. But the same as Sunn ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ O))) the subtle changes are done with such ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ precision timing they get a huge reaction from me ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ - such as the synths getting slightly tenser and ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ more dominant seven minutes from the end of this ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ track. Most everything else is pretty much the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ same throughout the track. Nice. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ 'Dark 2.9' is ten minutes of ambience and ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ frequent, muffled bursts of white noise. Usually ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ I'm not into the ambient stuff, but this is ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ whacked out enough and acid-trippy enough that I ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ enjoy it. And still it really sounds like space. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ That's what makes this album more of a success ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ than the last one. It sounds like the infinite ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ cosmos. The sound has become so minimal by the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ end of this that the return of the harsh guitar ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ sound in 'Dark 2.10' is positively agile. It's ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ far more expressive than 'Dark 2.8' and even has ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ some more typical riffs beginning at the four ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ minute mark. Again it collapses into ambience and ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ noise with eight minutes to go. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ I can't listen to this all the time. It probably ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ isn't meant to be listened to a lot. And you need ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ better speakers than I'm using from the sounds of ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ it. Hijack the cinema and play this through the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ screen and it would be incredible. But the reason ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ I pull out Darkspace when I'm in the mood for ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ something like this is they keep it really simple ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ - not that it isn't complicated. It's monumental, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ dark, fucking unique pitch insanity, but it feels ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ very pure, uncorrupted by any changes in ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ direction throughout the album, just one enormous ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ black hole swallowing everything with no regard ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ for its individual worth. Listen to it long ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ enough and you even start writing like a psycho. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
